The lift is accurate in design—a vertical elevator that carries vessels up and down the 113-metre dam height—but the scale is wrong. The ship lift at the real dam is 120 metres tall. On a 1:500 model, that lift should be 24 centimetres high. The model's lift is roughly 18 centimetres, which implies the ship lift section is at 1:667, consistent with the compressed riverbed base.
I asked the curator about this. He shrugged and said the lift was added "for atmosphere" and not surveyed. I'd have preferred accuracy, but I understand the constraint. The model hall has a fixed ceiling height. You can't build the lift to proper scale without cutting a hole in the roof. The ship itself is a generic passenger vessel, not a real design. I brought a calliper. I measured the model's representation of the Qutang Gorge entrance, which is supposed to be 150 metres wide at the real narrowest point. The model measures 29.8 centimetres across. Divide by 500, and you get 149 metres. Yes, it's dead on. The artisans used the original survey data. That's discipline.
If you care about engineering heritage, scale models, or the Yangtze River gorges, this is worth the trip. If you just want a selfie with a big diorama, it's still good, but you'll miss the tiny resin coffins and the steel-reinforced Goddess Peak. I recommend the second approach.
