Hull Proportions: A 28mm Scale Comparison

The Century Paragon measures 149.8 metres long by 24.6 metres wide, a beam that seems almost comically wide for a river vessel. In my hobby room, I once scratch-built a 1:350 scale model of a Panamax container ship, and looking at the Paragon’s dimensions, I immediately noticed the length-to-beam ratio: roughly 6.1:1. For comparison, a typical ocean cruise ship is around 8:1 or 9:1 – longer and narrower. The Paragon’s squat, wide profile is deliberate. It maximises interior volume while keeping the draught shallow enough for the upper Yangtze’s variable depths. DeckLayout: The Funnel Problem

The Paragon has six passenger decks, labelled 1 through 6 from the waterline up. From a layout perspective, the central atrium – a four-deck-high void with a glass elevator – is the obvious focal point. But as someone who has glued hundreds of tiny railing parts, I look at the circulation pathways. The main issue is the single forward stairwell. The aft stairwell is positioned awkwardly behind the galley, meaning that passengers at the rear of the ship must walk through the entire length of the deck to reach the observation lounge on Deck 6. This creates a bottleneck during lifeboat drills and meal times.

The elevator system is another point. Two passenger lifts serve all decks, but they are slow – typical of Chinese river ships. I timed them at roughly 15 seconds per floor. The deck is surprisingly uncluttered, with only two lifeboat davits at the stern. Most of the deck space is used for sun loungers, but there are no windbreaks. On a typical windy day between Wushan and Fengjie, the deck becomes unusable. I saw several guests retreat after 10 minutes.

The forward Observation Lounge on Deck 5 is the prime spot. It has floor-to-ceiling windows and a bow projection that offers a 240-degree view. The seating is arranged in clusters of four armchairs, but the layout forces guests to sit with their backs to the windows. This is a classic planning error – the furniture arrangement prioritises face-to-face social interaction over the viewing experience. From an engineering perspective, the lift is a rectangular steel tank with water volume of over 400,000 tonnes. As the ship enters, the clearance on each side is less than 30 cm. I stood at the bow and watched the crew use handheld laser rangefinders to align the hull.

The process takes 40 minutes from entry to exit. The lift moves at about 2 metres per second, which is surprisingly fast. There is a constant low hum from the hydraulic pistons, and the ship’s ballast system operates with a rhythmic thump-thump-thump to keep the vessel level. If you are on the lower decks, you can hear the water sloshing against the steel walls of the lift chamber. It is a sound I will try to replicate on my next diorama using a recording I made – a mix of concrete echo and water turbulence.

Dining and Logistics: Alipay and Buffet Flow

The main restaurant on Deck 3 is arranged as a long corridor with buffet stations on both sides. Capacity is around 300, but during peak breakfast (7:30–8:30 a.m.) the queue snakes past the coffee station and out into the atrium. The ship uses an Alipay-based payment system for the onboard shop and optional extras, but the Wi-Fi is too slow to process the QR codes consistently. I watched three guests struggle for 90 seconds each to load the payment page. Bring cash or have your card ready.

The kitchen operates two shifts: one for the breakfast buffet, one for the lunch and dinner plated service. The kitchen design itself is a classic “galley line” configuration, which I could see through the pass-through window. The hot-holding cabinets are set at 65°C, but the salad bar ice is not recirculated – I saw it melt into pools by 11 a.m. A minor hygiene concern, but noticeable to a detail-obsessed critic.

Final Verdict (But Not a Conclusion)

The Century Paragon is a well-thought-out vessel for its purpose – moving 400 passengers through the Yangtze’s narrow gorges and lifting them over the world’s largest dam. But its layout reveals compromises between luxury and practicality. The wide beam gives it stable hotel-like spaces but creates a noticeable roll. The cabin noise and buffet bottlenecks are flaws that a prototype model could have caught. On my model-making blog, I would have given it a “poor assembly – prime before painting” rating. In real life, it is a 7/10 ship with a 9/10 itinerary. Bring earplugs, carry a laser rangefinder for fun, and stand at the bow during the ship lift. That alone is worth the price of the voyage.
