The result is a three-dimensional depth that makes the model pop even under mediocre lighting.

At full scale, the roof ridge ends with a mythical beast (often a Chiwen fish-dragon) that serves as a lightning rod and decorative finial. In miniature, many modellers glue on a flat cast piece and call it done. But the real ones have a distinct forward lean of about 5 degrees – an intentional offset to counter the visual weight of the roof. I measured this on a resin model from Minghua: the beast was cast at a 90-degree angle. I had to carefully heat and bend the resin by 5 degrees using a hairdryer. After a coat of gold leaf (Humbrol 16), the improvement was subtle but definitive. The eye registers the correct stance even if it can't articulate why.
It's easy to romanticise ancient building techniques, but the reality is that these pavilions were highly engineered structures. The dougong evolved over centuries to allow flexible seismic resistance – the brackets can move slightly during an earthquake, dissipating energy. In miniature, I've tested a scratch-built model on a shaking table (a subwoofer speaker driven by a sine wave). The resin brackets snapped. The wooden model, with loose-fitting joints that mimicked the originals, held. That taught me something about material science: resin is brittle, wood is forgiving. The same principle governs the real structures: the wooden columns of the Forbidden City have survived earthquakes because they sit on stone bases and rock, not break.
On the modern side, the Century Oasis development in Chongqing uses a steel-and-glass structure inspired by traditional pavilion forms. I saw a 1:50 architectural model of that building in the sales office – it used 3D-printed steel components. The aesthetics were clean, but there was no weathering, no sense of time. That's the difference between a model that documents a design and a model that tells a story. The ancient pavilion models, when done right, have a narrative layer: the fading paint, the mossy base, the slightly cracked beam. They are history reduced to a manageable size.
If you order a resin model via Alipay from China to the UK, expect a lead time of 4-6 weeks. The packaging is usually industrial-grade bubble wrap inside a wooden crate. I've had one model arrive with a broken bracket – the seller refunded half the cost after a WeChat exchange with photos. For display, keep these models away from direct sunlight; the UV will yellow the resin and fade the paint within three months. A glass display case with a UV-absorbing acrylic panel is essential.
And please, do not use standard superglue on the dougong joints. Cyanoacrylate becomes brittle and snaps under vibration. Use PVA or a two-part epoxy (Araldite) with a 24-hour cure time. The end result is a model that can be handled without fear of collapse – a good thing, because you'll want to turn it around to see the tiny eaves at different angles.
