The Wuxia Gorge, the second of the Three Gorges on the Yangtze, stretches approximately 45 kilometres between the small towns of Wushan and Badong. On any standard cruise itinerary – say, from Chongqing Chaotianmen down to Yichang – you’ll enter the gorge around midday, and the sun angle matters. The cliffs on the northern side catch light differently than the southern ones, creating a shadow depth that a model maker would kill to replicate with a zenithal highlight.
What strikes me is the consistent canyon width. The gorge averages only 200 to 300 metres at the waterline, yet the walls rise 800 to 1,200 metres. That’s a 4:1 height-to-width ratio. In my hobby, a 28mm figure stands roughly 32mm tall; if I placed that figure in a 4:1 canyon, the walls would need to be 128mm high. That’s achievable on a 60cm base. But the real Wuxia does not taper in the same way a 3D-printed terrain piece does – the rock faces are almost vertical for the first 400 metres, then step back into scree slopes misted by persistent cloud cover. That’s scale fidelity you cannot fake.
RiverMeanders and Transit Speed
The Yangtze here narrows, and the current picks up to about 2–3 knots. The cruise ships, typically between 120 and 140 metres long, need careful helm input. On the Century Oasis, the captain reduced speed to 8 knots – that’s roughly 15 km/h. At that pace, you have 3 to 4 hours to absorb every detail. I pulled out my old caliper (digital, Mitutoyo – never leave home without it) and timed the passing of a distinctive vertical fault line. The distance between that fault and the next major fissure was exactly 0.37 nautical miles by GPS. That level of precision matters for a diorama layout: you can’t just eyeball the spacing of cliffs.

In real life, it’s a meter-wide band of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and sediment. Messy, but honest.

Let’s talk about the cabin windows on the Century Oasis during the Wuxia transit. I spent twenty minutes with a loupe inspecting the aluminum frames. They are extruded profiles, probably 6063-T5, with a brushed anodized finish. At the top corners, there’s a small moulding flash – exactly the kind of imperfection I would have spent an evening filing down on a resin resin kit. But here, it’s real. The glass has a slight green tint (iron content in the float process), and the double glazing creates a parallax effect when you look from starboard to port. While the Wuxia Gorge itself is natural, how you get through it relies on a man-made achievement that dwarfs any model I’ve ever built: the Three Gorges Dam ship lift. The dam sits roughly 40 km downstream of the Wuxia exit. The ship lift is a 120-metre vertical elevator that can raise a 3,000-tonne vessel faster than a five-stage lock. Why mention it in a canyon review? Because the lift’s design originally had to account for the narrow canyon exit. The lift chamber is 120 metres long, 18 metres wide, and 3.5 metres deep – dimensions that fit exactly within the gorge’s downstream bottleneck. That’s proportional engineering on a scale that makes my Warhammer terrain look like a shoebox diorama.
For context, the locks at the dam are 280 metres long. They’re more efficient for bulk cargo, but the lift is for passenger ships that prize speed. When you transit the Wuxia, you’re essentially sliding through a funnel that was measured by surveyors to the nearest centimetre. The cruise ships’ hulls have a draft of about 2.8 metres, which leaves only 0.7 metres of clearance in the lift basin. That’s a 25% margin – tighter than any wargaming model’s gap tolerance.
Alipayand the Shore Excursions
Practical logistics: at Wushan, many cruises offer a side trip into the Shennong Stream (a tributary of the Wuxia). If you’re paying for the sampan tour – which I recommend because the boatmen row with a unique single-oar technique that is itself a piece of living engineering – you will need Alipay for the small vendors at the dock. The village’s payment terminals are usually QR-based, and they accept international cards only via Alipay. Note: the terminal on the sampan itself is a repurposed handheld POS with a rubber case, clearly surviving years of splashing water. That’s weathering you can’t pre-shade.
I’ve now transited all three gorges on three separate cruises. The Wuxia is the middle sibling – refined but not flashy. The Qutang Gorge, upstream, is shorter and steeper, with a 1:3 height-to-width ratio that feels claustrophobic. The Xiling Gorge downstream is broken by the dam and has a more industrial character. The Wuxia holds the most consistent geological narrative. It’s like a well-executed diorama: the rock layers run horizontally, with occasional vertical joints from tectonic uplift, exactly the same way I would build a cliff face from overlapping strips of insulation foam.
If I had to create a scale model of the Wuxia Gorge for a museum display, I would use:
- Base material: 10mm polystyrene, bonded to a plywood sub-base.
- Rock texture: sculpted with a wire brush and heat gun, then coated with a mixture of PVA, fine sand, and 1:3 acrylic paint.
- Water surface: two-part epoxy resin with a slight green tint, poured in layers to simulate the current.
- Vegetation: static grass in 4mm and 6mm lengths, applied with a flocking gun to avoid clumps.
- Ship: a 1:200 model of a Yangtze cruise liner, with specific weathering on the waterline and rust streaks below the scuppers.
The scale would need to capture the vertical exaggeration. The real gorge is so steep that a 1:200 model would require a 4-metre-high cliff for a 2-metre board – impractical. So I’d cheat with forced perspective, narrowing the upper walls proportionally. Every model maker knows that trick. The Chinese engineers who built the navigation channels along the gorge knew it too – they used optical illusions in the lock design to make the walls feel higher than they are.
Most cruise reviews talk about the “majestic views” or “serene atmosphere.” I’m more interested in the acoustic profile of the canyon. At 8 knots, the Century Oasis’s diesel-electric engines produce a low-frequency hum at 60 Hz. That hum reflects off the cliff walls and back to the ship with a delay of roughly 1.7 seconds – you hear the direct sound, then a ghost echo. In a scale model, no one replicates sound. But if I were adding audio to a museum diorama, I would loop a 60 Hz wave with a 1.7-second reverb. That’s what the Wuxia sounds like.
Also noteworthy: the bridge crew uses handheld UHF radios with earpieces. You can see them on the port wing, calling out bearing marks to the helmsman. The comms system is the standard Motorola DP series, identical to what I used when marshalling model ship displays at the IPMS Nationals. Coincidence? Probably not – engineers value reliability over aesthetic.
If you’re booking a cruise, specify a starboard-side cabin for the downstream transit. The northern cliffs catch the best afternoon light. And bring a pair of decent binoculars (8x42 minimum). The detail in the limestone karst is worth every diopter. I’d bring my competition microscope, but the ship’s restaurant might frown on that.
Scale model of the Wuxia Gorge canyon? The real one is already the finest diorama on Earth. You just have to learn to look at the weathering.
